- David knew God personally. v1a
- A relationship with God is personal. He has to be my God. You can't rely on anyone else's relationship with Him.
- Personal does not mean casual. He is still God and holy and mighty.
- David desired God personally. vv1b–2
- David didn't just want what God could give him.
- God is the only thing that can truly satisfy our desires.
- If we really desire God, our lives will reflect our pursuit of Him.
- David wanted a fresh experience with God.
- He remembered previous experiences with God, but he wasn't content with that. He wanted to know God now.
- Our experiences with God shouldn't just be good memories in the past.
- David valued God above everything else. v3
- God wasn't just a means to a better life. God was better than life itself.
- David's desire produced praise.
- Praise follows what we value.
- Yet often we just talk about ourselves because that's what we truly love.
- God satified David. v5
- Even when David was hungry in the desert, his soul was full.
- Our circumstances do not determine our satisfaction.
- David thought about God personally. v6
- He wasn't putting on a show. His love and desire were genuine.
- We shouldn't only think about God at church.
- A real relationship with God goes home with you and everywhere else.
- His mind naturally gravitated to God.
- He meditated on God—ruminated.
- David depended upon God personally. vv7–8
- David had a history with God. He had repeatedly seen God's working and protection in his life.
- Too often we doubt God. We get myopic and forget all that He has before.
- David knew to trust God becuase of how he has seen him before.
- We may not know why we are going through what we're going through, but we can have confidence in the One who's in control.
- David clung to God. v8a
- Same word as Genesis 2:24
- We should not be okay with anything coming between us and God.
- But it was God who held David up. v8b
- David was pursuing God, but God was sustaining David.
- We can't sustain ourselves.
